Yoshio Machida is a musician and a visual artist. Born in Japan in 1967.
He has been working since 1986, in his theme about "light, echo and possibility."
He uses sound of field recordings in several countries, ethnic musical instruments which he plays, noise, some electoronics and computer in his audio art. The pieces in his "HYPERNATURAL" series include those various sounds. It means that Hypernatural sound is straddling fields, such as ambient, experimental music, electro-acoustic, noise, electronics, and contemporary music. That is, Hypernatural is music which is not bound by the specific genre.
Machida is tackling not only audio art but also music activities of live performance.
Machida performs "AMORPHONE"(which he made by his own hand) as solo and with a realtime processing system of Max/MSP. Amorphone is a kind of steel pan, but the timbre is different from normal one. And the intonation is also original one, not 12-tone Equal Temperament or Just Intonation.
In the visual work of Machida, he produced his original style "PHOTOBATIK" from his collage work of the 90s. Photobatik is painting which used photopaper, not photograph and photogram. This is the result of being born through the influence of minimalists and collage artits in the field of contemporary art, or his trip experiences in Asian countries.
Thus, Machida's expression is variably. Through concept of genre, sense organs, and the form and theory for historical positioning, it is meaningless to connect by force "listening" and "seeing", or to classify. Because the important thing in Machida's art is feeling the element of expanse (echo) and possibility in his work intuitively.
